AZTECANA was founded in 1989 by Joan and Donald Caskie. We crossed a Quarter Horse mare with Negrito, a Lusitano stallion, in order to produce a high performance horse with personality, style and agility. We learned that the name of this cross was an Azteca, a breed created in 1972 in Mexico. We contacted Don Antonio Ariza Canadilla in Mexico for more information. With the assistance of Don Juan Miralles, the Consul General in Toronto, Ontario for the Government of Mexico, we acquired more information about the breed and were personally introduced to breeders in Mexico.
In 1990, we imported Azteca breeding stock from Rancho San Antonio in Texcoco, Mexico. We developed our breeding program using this stock from Mexico, our original Quarter Horse mare and outside servicing by Lusitano stallions, and Andalusian semen imported from Mexico.
In 2002, for health reasons of its partners, AZTECANA was forced to downsize its operations substantially and to change from a comprehensive breeding, training, and boarding facility to one more limited in scope focusing on the sale of frozen semen from our stallion, Texcoco, and demonstrations and advertising services featuring Texcoco and Sintreca. We have also kept one of our best mares, Sintreca; we may have foals available for sale from her starting in 2008.

AZTECANA has been a major force in promoting the Azteca breed in Canada and worldwide. We are a founding member of the International Azteca Horse Association (IAzHA) and are on its the board of directors).

Over the course of almost two decades of breeding, training and organizational work involving Azteca horses, AZTECANA has maintained the following goals and beliefs:

To breed the highest quality Azteca Horses in conformity to the standards and strict inspection procedures established by the International Azteca Horse Association (IAzHA) and it's registry in Mexico City.

To breed Azteca Horses with performance and function as the supreme criteria of our program followed closely by elegance and beauty.

To promote our Azteca Horses in the traditions of horsemanship established through the centuries in Mexico. Use of Mexican tack and costume is encouraged.

To develop our Azteca Horses so that the breed's unique personality and natural ability are allowed to blossom.

To train horses in multiple disciplines using basic classical training as the foundation for further, more specialized training. Some of these high performance disciplines include charro, doma vaquera, la garrocha, cutting, reining, bullfighting, dressage, classical riding, team penning, working cow horse and more.

To be in the forefront of technology in our breeding and training programs while still relying on the best traditional practices.
